Supreme Court On Padmavati Movie
The SC judges have issued a statement saying that it is the prerogative of the national censor board to review the film and make a decision on whether it is suitable for screening.
“When the matter is pending the consideration of the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification), how can persons hold public offices comment on whether CBFC should issue a certificate or not? That will prejudice the decision of the CBFC,” the judges said.
After the court’s remarks, top Haryana minister Anil Vij reacted saying, “if we have to seek a permission from the Supreme Court to make a comment… it’s not right.” Haryana is among the states waiting for the censor board’s clearance to release the movie.
While Supreme Court of India is also busy quashing petitions which seek –
Overseas ban on Padmavati’s release
Ban on Padmavati across India
Criminal prosecution against actors and producers of the movie
Who was Padmavati?
According to the historical records by Persians writers, Gora Badal Padmini Chaupai by Rajput Hemratan and Jamesh Tod (an officer of East India Company) in Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, Rani Padmini or Padmavati, was a beautiful Rajput queen of 13th century India.
When Mughal ruler Ala-Ud-Din Khilji, decided to attack Chittor, Padmini with others committed Johar (self-immolation). While her husband Ratan Sen died fighting against the Mughal king Khilji.
As per Amir Khusrau’s (a Sufi poet, a literary person from Mughal era in the 13th century) accounts, Chittor was attacked by Khilji to ascertain his supremacy over several Indian states at that time. And Khusrau rejects any relation of Chittor siege with the queen. Rather, he presents accounts of the ruler of Chittor surrendering to Khilji. After which, Khilji demanded queen Padmini to humiliate the ruler. This prompted the queen to self-immolate to avoid falling into the clutches of Mughals.
