RDR2 vs RDR vs GTA 5 Sales Comparison: Red Dead Redemption 2 Off With A Good Start
Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) sales are off with a good start. Take-Two Interactive (the parent company) CEO Strauss Zelnick told CNBC that RDR2 has shipped more than 17 million copies in 8 days, surpassing the sales of its predecessor – Red Dead Redemption (RDR).
More Successful Than Its Predecessor
Before RDR2 was released, there were already a lot of expectations for the game, given the success of Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5), GTA Online, and RDR. Basically, the hype was real. Fortunately, Rockstar didn’t fail to deliver as the game has been receiving quite the positive response from both the fans and the gaming community since its initial release back on October 26, 2018.
Speaking with CNBC, Zelnick said that in 3 days they sold in $725 million worth of product to which he describes as “the biggest opening weekend for any entertainment product in the history of any type”. The CEO was very pleased with the results and said that it was way better than their expectations.
When asked about how RDR2’s sales compared to RDR, the CEO said that in 8 days they’ve sold in 17 million copies of Red Dead Redemption 2. He then notes that it’s more than they sold over the first Red Dead Redemption in a year.
However, to be exact, if you go check the Wikipedia page of RDR, the numbers are quite shocking. Since its release in 2010, the game has shipped over 15 million copies by 2017.
Comparing It To GTA 5’s Sales
With GTA 5, within 24 hours since its release, it generated more than $800 million in worldwide revenue, which roughly translates around 11.21 million copies. Three days after its release, it surpassed $1 billion in sales. And then 6 weeks later after its release, nearly 29 million copies were shipped.
Speaking of GTA 5 and RDR2, we published not so long ago a map comparison between the GTA 5 and RDR2 map. On the same article, we also attached a video by “Dat Saintsfan” which talks about the “map that shows everything important”.
We also published an article regarding the rumored release date of Red Dead Online. In addition to that are the rumored games features.
