Primetime Emmy Awards Unveils Nominees For 2018 Ceremony
The nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this Thursday in Los Angeles. After going through all the nominations, I must have to say Emmy Awards 2018 are going to be different and quite special. The 2018 ceremony is sort of set to herald a new era for the Emmys. But what makes us say so?
If we take a close look at all the nominations, we find many surprise entries have come forth across the various categories, with nominations for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, and GLOW in the best comic series category against the perennial winners such as Modern Family and Veep that are, much to our surprise, not even nominated this season.
Though, it might get a little time to sink in, relatively new player Netflix has done the unthinkable at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations. It has just dethroned HBO from the top position of being the most nominated network for 17 years in a row. Netflix led nominations with 112 nominations against HBO’s 108 nominations. However, Game of Thrones, an HBO property, led all shows with 22 Emmy nominations, followed by Westworld and Saturday Night Live, which each garnered 21 nods. The Handmaid’s Tale followed them closely by clocking 20 nominations.
Kenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live also received a nomination for the show. Sandra Oh surprised one and all by becoming the first Asian woman to be nominated in the lead actress category for her role as Eve Polastri in BBC America’s well-received murder-mystery series, Killing Eve.
Another interesting nomination is of John Legend, who seems set to join the league of Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, John Gielgud and Whoopi Goldberg by achieving EGOT status. By EGOT status, we mean having a Grammy, Tony and Oscar and Emmy Awards in one’s shelf. If Legend walks away with an Emmy for his lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar Live, he will definitely gain an EGOT status. Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, who breathed his last almost a month ago, earns six posthumous nominations
This Amazon comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel nabbed 14 nominations, including best comedy. Brosnahan has been nominated for the lead actress trophy, while Tony Shalhoub, Alex Borstein and Jane Lynch bag nominations for their respective roles in the series. The Netflix reboot of Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy bags a nomination for a well- structured reality program.
The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards are set to be held on Monday, Sept. 17, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Colin Jost and Michael Che have been entrusted with the responsibility of hosting the glitzy ceremony.
