Pregnant Women Consuming Marijuana: Why Should Doctors Discourage?
Consumption of marijuana has been on the rise over the last few years. In fact, the drug is quite popular due to its medical benefits and recreational purposes. However, the long-standing debate about how safe or risky marijuana consumption is for pregnant women has finally come to an end with a concrete answer.
According to a study by Jama Network, there has been a sudden increase in marijuana consumption amongst pregnant females in Kaiser Permanente Northern California. An 8-year-old survey conducted by the Kaiser Permanente researchers in this region confirms that the drug use has increased from 4.2% to 7.1% amongst the pregnant women. The number is quite high (12.5% to 21.8%) amongst the soon to be mothers under 18 years of age, while those between 18 to 24 years old are recorded between 9.8% to 19.0%.
Reason why number of pregnant women are addicted to marijuana
One of the biggest reasons why many pregnant women prefer to smoke weed is because it helps them get rid of morning sickness. They are not even aware of the damage marijuana causes to pregnancy. In the recent times, more and number of states are legalizing weed, which has made the availability of marijuana much easier than before. Due to the lack of warnings provided, most people mistake marijuana as safe.
As per a study by ACOG, gynecologists should discourage pregnant women from consuming marijuana. However, they can be prescribed weed only under certain conditions as follows:
- Even before recommending marijuana, doctors should ask the patients about their past history of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs use.
- Pregnant women “should be encouraged to discontinue use of marijuana for medicinal purposes in favor of an alternative therapy for which there are better pregnancy-specific safety data”.
- As weed can have adverse effects on infants, it is crucial to discourage new mothers from consuming drugs, especially during the lactation period.
On a general note, it is suggested that pregnant moms should consult their doctors before consuming any kind of drug.
