As we’ve mentioned in our previous write-ups, Sony’s PlayStation 5, albeit a popular topic inside the tech and gaming community, is still pretty much built upon unfounded and speculated information. But despite this being the case, talks about the PlayStation 4’s successor continue to persist on the interwebs, creating much anticipation. With this in mind, we feel obligated to break new ground on the PS5’s development. That’s why we’ve gathered every relevant detail regarding the upcoming console, to give you no less than a clear image of what form the PS5 will take on.

PlayStation 5 Release Date

When it comes to the PS5, confirmations have been scarce –more specifically on the aspect of a plausible launch date. Previous speculations suggested that the PlayStation 5 was supposed to see a release this 2018, but many were skeptical if this particular timeline fits the case as it has only been a little over two years since Sony revealed the PS4 Pro, which improved the original PS4 in the aspect of performance and processing by a large leap.

Now, many believe that the PS5 will likely see a more realistic outing either in 2020 or 2021. This particular timeframe has been supported by key players in the gaming industry such as Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot and IDC’s Lewis Ward. According to Guillemot’s estimates, the market may experience a hiatus on console releases in a span of two years, which means that top industry developers, Sony and Microsoft,  wouldn’t be coming out with a console follow-up until 2020. Meanwhile, Mr. Ward simply argues that a PS5 reveal on 2021 would be the most logical move for Sony as current advancements in game technology have already been integrated into the tech giant’s latest offering that is the PS4 Pro.

All in all, seeing as Sony is keeping mum on the situation regarding the PS5, it’s safe to say that we will not be seeing a concrete lead verifying the existence of the PS5, much less on its release, until two years from now.

PlayStation 5 Specifications

In terms of hardware, at this point in time, we can’t really assess the full capabilities of the PS5, not without any definite clues as to what advancements in gaming the future might see unfold. However, TrustedReviews argues that rather than guess, what we can do is to analyze the current competition in the form of Microsoft’s Xbox One X. Currently, the Xbox One X is tagged as the most powerful gaming console, packing an eight-core 2.3 GHz CPU fittingly partnered with 12GB GDDR5 memory and a GPU operating at 1172MHz. Taking this specifications into account, we can say that it’s possible for Sony to release a device that’s much more powerful and process-intensive, however, it is also important to note that they may also choose to forego this path and offer something that’s more affordable and less on the stats, which they did effectively with the PS4 series.

PlayStation 5 Features

Feature-wise, the most notable we could find is that following Microsoft’s successful venture into the backward compatible game genre, Sony is also said to be taking the plunge developing a similar feature for the PlayStation 5. According to Daily Star, this report first found its way in the front row when a Sony Interactive Entertainment America patent was updated last month with this phrase, “Backward compatibility testing of software in a mode that disrupts timing.”

While this new addition may sound exciting for some, it still remains to be seen if Sony is indeed planning to incorporate it into their upcoming platform, the PS5, since James Ryan of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe previously expressed reluctance to the idea when he spoke with TIME early last year.

PlayStation 5 Price Point

On the aspect of pricing, all we can do now is to take guesses as we still do not know what specific hardware parts the PS5 will be comprised of. However, looking towards the closest competitor Sony has, the PlayStation 5 will likely be granted a price tag similar to the Xbox One X, which is currently valued at $ 450. If Sony wants to stay toe to toe with Microsoft, then our best bet would be in that range or maybe even lower.
