Nintendo Switch 2: All Developments So Far, Will We See It This Year?
March is right around the corner and there are quite a few tech devices that are reportedly coming in the said month.
Speaking of devices, the Nintendo Switch will be 2 years old this March 3, 2019. There have been reports about a new Nintendo Switch 2 coming this year. Will we see it in 2019?
Is It Coming This Year?
A report from Dexerto notes an interview of industry analyst for Wedbush Securities Michael Pachter with Gaming Bolt. According to Pachter, people shouldn’t expect for a Nintendo Switch 2 to be released this year. Instead, what people should expect is a Nintendo Switch Lite.
So when can we expect the Nintendo Switch 2? According to Dexerto, it could be in 2022. Why? This is because the Nintendo Wii U was released in 2012 and there was a five-year wait until the Japanese game developer decided to bring out the Switch.
But What If Nintendo Does Release A Switch 2 This Year?
If Nintendo does decide to announce or release the Switch 2 or any new console, tech enthusiasts and the gaming community can most likely expect it at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The event is scheduled from June 11 – 13, 2019 and will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, California, US.
Okay… So What Is This Nintendo Switch Lite?
The Switch Lite is basically a toned down or “reinvented” Switch. Pachter said that one of the things that Nintendo could do is to make it a handheld-only Nintendo Switch with a cheaper price tag around $200 — the Nintendo Switch launched with a price tag of $299.99.
In fact, there have been reports about it:
Firstly, according to a report, back in October 2018, Wall Street Journal cited “suppliers and others with direct knowledge” of Nintendo’s plans. Apparently, Nintendo is expected to release a new iteration of the Nintendo Switch in 2019.
Secondly, analyst Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games predicted that for 2019, there will be a Switch Pro and Lite.
And lastly, with Nintendo’s 5.0 firmware update to its current Switch console, Switchbrew Hackers discovered that firmware 5.0 adds compatibility with an unannounced Switch revision with the codename “Mariko”.
Based on the reports, we can more or less say that the Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t coming this year. The way we see it, if Nintendo does release a new console this year, it will most likely be a new iteration of the original Switch. But of course, without any official announcements of Nintendo, it’s best to take the things mentioned with a pinch of salt.
