While Microsoft is working hard on developing its Surface Phone, Motorola or better say Lenovo doesn’t want to be the last in the race for the first ever foldable smartphone. As a matter of fact, the company’s patent reveals that its upcoming foldable handset can turn into a tablet.

Motorola Patent Filing Details

Motorola has filed a patent with WIPO on September 13, 2016, for a foldable smartphone that can be unfolded as a tablet. Though it’s a bit long process, the said patent was approved on March 13, 2018. The smartphone will function as a normal phone when folded and when the owner unfolds it, the device will function as a full-fledged tablet.

It is worth noting that designing a truly foldable smartphone is certainly a tremendous task. But then, developing a foldable device that’s ready for mass market is much tougher harder. But despite that, Motorola is doubling its effort to be able to match those foldable handsets that other smartphone manufacturers are making.

Motorola Foldable Smartphone Design

When it comes to the design, the patent reveals that there’s a hinge in the middle of the smartphone or the tablet device which doesn’t appear like an elegant solution. In fact, it looks somewhat similar to ZTE’s Axon M foldable phone that flaunts dual screens. Additionally, Motorola’s upcoming foldable smartphone will house the main camera at the top left and the speaker will be positioned on the top right.

Moreover, the patent filing also contains information about a cover that must not only safeguard the device but also function as a wireless charger when needed. Nonetheless, the case will be detachable and will have an opening for the camera. Motorola CEO, Yang Yuanqing shared his opinions about the company’s upcoming foldable smartphones during MWC 2018 and here’s what he stated:

“With the new technology, especially foldable screens, I think you will see more and more innovation on our smartphone design. So hopefully what you just described [the Motorola Razr brand] will be developed or realized very soon.”

As of now, the development of Motorola’s foldable smartphone is still unknown but it’s hoped that we can have more details about the said handset. Stay tuned for future updates regarding this device.
