Will This Finally Be The Year That The Apple Mac Mini 2 Will Come?
So it’s been years since Apple has updated its Mac Mini and many of its fans are still hoping for a new version to be released. So when can we expect it? Will this finally be the year that we will get to see the Mac Mini 2?
The Release Date
The last update of the Mac Mini was way back on October 16, 2014. As of now, assuming that there will be a 2018 version, the most likely date that it will be released is in October. In fact, even well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that it will be released this autumn.
There’s Already a “New“ Version
According to a report, there is already, in fact,t a new Mac Mini, but it isn’t what you think it is. Well, this new version was made out of the aluminum from recycled iPhone 6 handsets and is only made available for Apple employees.
For its price, the only lead we have today is the price tags of the current models. The cheapest one costs £479 ($611), the mid-range costs £679 ($866), and the most expensive one costs £949 ($1,211). Reports suggest that the upcoming Mac Mini 2018 will likely stick close to these prices or higher.
Has It Been Discontinued?
Sure, we can cite the release dates and prices all day to speculate, but the main question is: Has it been discontinued? It’s not uncommon for tech companies to discontinue their products due to various reasons.
So, is there an upcoming version? Well, last April of 2017 a report was made regarding Apple’s VP of product marketing Phil Schiller saying:
“The Mac mini is an important product in our lineup and we weren’t bringing it up because it’s more of a mix of consumer with some pro use. … The Mac Mini remains a product in our lineup, but nothing more to say about it today.“
In addition to this, the report also mentioned that “it won’t be cancelled anytime soon” so we can safely assume that there’s actually one coming. But when? Only time will tell.
For Mac Mini 2 design, there are rumors. One is, given that the said device hasn’t had a redesign since 2010, there’s expectation that it could get smaller and thinner. The second one is that way back in April of 2017, a report said that it “won’t be so mini anymore” which led people to assume that more powerful components will be added which will require more room for better cooling.
For its processors, it could feature Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake or Whiskey Lake processors. In addition to that, another possibility is the Amber Lake chips. Also, in case that there won’t be a Mac Mini 2 released this year then it could be Cannonlake processors.
For its graphics card, assuming that it will come with Coffee Lake processors, it could use Iris Plus Graphics 655. But of course, this is just an assumption, so we will have to wait until Apple actually releases the said Mac Mini 2.
For its RAM, the entry-level version is expected to feature 4GB as its standard and then reach up to 8GB. Meanwhile, for its storage, it is expected to make Fusion Drive as a standard.
Reports are expecting it to come with Apple TV functionality. However, it may need to come with 4K to which the current models aren’t capable of.
Another is the ports. Hopefully, it will come with Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type-C as standard.
