Is The Mac Mini 2 Coming... Or Has It Been Discontinued?
This month, Apple rolled out new MacBook Pro models out the blue which was quite a pleasant surprise. But what about the Mac Mini 2? It’s been years since it got updated.
Has It Been Discontinued?
If we are to go with the reports, the answer would be no. In fact, last April of 2017, senior VP of worldwide marketing at Apple Phil Schiller briefly mentioned on a press event that,
“The Mac mini is an important product in our lineup and we weren’t bringing it up because it’s more of a mix of consumer with some pro use. … The Mac Mini remains a product in our lineup, but nothing more to say about it today.“
But despite this, so far we haven’t seen it. However, to further support its existence, there have been other reports as well.
One example would be back in 2017 where a rumor suggests that the high-end version of the device “won’t be so mini anymore” which led people to speculate that more powerful components will be added which will require more room for better cooling. Another example would be a recent post from analyst Rene Ritchie saying that the Mac Mini 2 is still actively being worked on. Even well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that it will come this autumn.
Also, in case you are not aware, there is already, in fact, a “new” Mac mini, but it’s only available to Apple employees. Apparently, the new version of the device was made out of the aluminum from recycled iPhone 6 handsets.
So When Can We Expect It?
Well, aside from Kuo’s prediction, other reports suggested that Mac Mini 2018 could be released this October. Why? Well, the current model was released way back on October 16, 2014.
How Much Will It Cost?
Regarding its price, the only thing we can do for now is base it on the 2014 model. During its release, there were three models being offered: the low-end which costs $499, the mid-range $699, and the high-end $999.
