iPhone SE2: Is There Still Hope For Next Year?

6:57 PM

Remember the days where you can just slip an iPhone in your super tight jeans without worrying too much if it will break? Yeah, those were the days where iPhone models like the iPhone SE provided such luxury.

Speaking of the 4-inch iPhone SE, where is its successor – iPhone SE2? 2018 is almost ending yet Apple hasn’t released it yet.

Sure, some may argue that its successor is the iPhone XR or it has been replaced by the iPhone XR line as the “budget model”. But despite that, there are still some people who hope for a 4-inch successor or something similar to that size. Is it coming next year instead?

What Killed The iPhone SE Line?

The iPhone XR reportedly killed the iPhone SE line by taking the spot as Apple’s “budget iPhone” for 2018 with a price tag starting at $749 (the iPhone SE currently starts at $349 with its 32GB variant). As for the reasons why the iPhone SE line was killed, we can name two factors (of course there are other factors as well):

Larger Screens With Fewer Bezels

In recent years, the market has been steadily moving away from smaller screens. The popular smartphone design trend is to have larger screens with fewer bezels.

But can’t Apple just increase the screen size a little bit, like making the iPhone SE 2’s display between 4.5 inches and 5 inches? This is a good question. Unfortunately, we (73Buzz) can’t give a straight answer to this. But if you can provide a better explanation, we would like to hear from you in the comment section below.

As for our answer to the question, if we are going to give an answer, well, rather than an answer, it would be close to an observation which doesn’t really prove that much at all. That would be our observation with the 2018 smartphones.

Take for example the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro, and OnePlus 6 and 6T. What do these smartphones have in common? They all have at least 6-inch screens.

Although the Google Pixel 3 features 5.5-inches, the Pixel phones aren’t popular for their designs. At best, they’re known for their camera performance and other things. But hey, at least the Pixel 3 XL features a 6.3-inch screen.

As for the 2018 iPhones, only the iPhone XS features a 5.8-inch screen. Meanwhile, the iPhone XR features 6.1 inches and iPhone XS Max 6.5 inches.

As you can see, screen size-wise, smartphone manufacturers are tilting towards phones with larger screens – around 6 inches.

Blame iOS

Another factor is that iOS has also been steadily moving away from smaller screens. According to iMore, both the system and the apps can barely squeeze themselves onto the 320 points wide display anymore. And although it still works, it’s getting less and less usable over time.

Is There An iPhone SE 2 Coming?

iMore noted a few rumors all the way back to August 2017. Here are a few rumors that the report quoted:

Focus Taiwan – August 4, 2017:

According to the sources, Wistron is expected to start to ship the new iPhone SE — which is expected to be more affordable than larger iPhones for many Indian consumers — in the first quarter of next year.

Taiwan’s Economic Daily News – November 22, 2017:

Apple will release the new iPhone SE2 in the first half of next year, attacking emerging markets and igniting the first battle between Apple and non-Apple in the next year.

TrendForce via MacRumors – January 2, 2018:

Apple is planning to launch a second-generation iPhone SE in 2018 to target the mid-range smartphone market.”

Ming-Chi Kuo via MacRumors – January 29, 2018:

With three new models in the pipeline for the second half of 2018, we believe Apple may have used up its development resources. Also, we think the firm will do all it can to avoid repeating the mistake of a shipment delay for the three new models. As such, we believe Apple is unlikely to have enough spare resources to develop a new iPhone model for launch in 2Q18.

There were many other rumors as well mentioned on iMore’s report.

However, it is also important to note that back in September, Apple officially discontinued the iPhone SE along with the iPhone 6s and iPhone X.  And so far, there has only been three iPhones – iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max – and 2018 is almost ending.

Apple Working On An Low-End iPhone?

Despite the fact that the iPhone SE has been discontinued, there is a rumor that the Cupertino-based tech company is working on a low-end iPhone codenamed “Hangzhou”. The said device is suggested to be exclusive to the Indian and China market.

Thanks to this, it also led to speculations that Apple may release an iPhone SE2 next year. Whether this is true or not, all we can do is wait for more details.

As you may have already heard, Apple’s iPhone sales haven’t been looking too good. There’s also that on-going issue could ban some Apple iPhones sales amid Qualcomm fight.

So perhaps releasing a “true” affordable iPhone (not that $749 budget model…) would be a great idea? Let’s face it: Why would people choose an expensive iPhone when there are other high-end smartphones out there that are less expensive? Because Apple is a well-known brand or they’re an Apple-only user? People just have too many options now.

But what do you think? Is there still a chance that Apple will release an iPhone SE2? Or are people just waiting for nothing so they just have to accept the fact that it has been replaced by the iPhone XR and should just expect for a successor to the XR instead? Tell us in the comment section below.
