iPhone 5.42-inch Display Coming In 2020: Is This The iPhone SE 2?
Just when many people have already little hope regarding the iPhone SE 2 (aka iPhone SE2), rumors about a small iPhone as part of Apple’s 2020 plans came out. But is this really the iPhone SE 2 though?
Apple’s Future iPhone Plans
News outlets have cited a report from DigiTimes talking about Apple’s supposed 2020 plans. Apparently, the Cupertino-based tech company will launch three OLED-based new iPhone devices in 2020.
The screen sizes of the 2020 iPhones will be 5.42 inches, 6.06 inches, and 6.67-inch. Regarding the 5.42-inch iPhone, it is rumored to come with either Samsung Display’s Y-Octa or LG Display’s TOE touch technology which will trim down the display cost.
DigiTimes also talked about the 2019 iPhone models. As stated by the report, Apple will continue to roll out three models following the screen technologies and sizes of the three phones launched in 2018 which are two OLED models (iPhone XS and XS Max) and one LCD model (iPhone XR).
So The iPhone SE 2 Is One Of Them?
Reports are speculating that the smaller iPhone, the 5.42-inch model, could be the iPhone SE2 or something close to it. But is it though? Let’s take a look at the screen sizes.
If we look at the 2018 iPhone models, we have:
- iPhone XS — 5.8 inches (OLED)
- iPhone XS Max — 6.5 inches (OLED)
- iPhone XR — 6.1 inches (LCD)
The XS models were the premium smartphone while the XR was the budget model.
Now, if we look at the supposed 2020 iPhone models, we have:
- 5.42 inches (OLED)
- 6.06 inches (OLED)
- 6.67-inches (OLED)
And if we look at the original iPhone SE, it sported an LCD screen with a size of 4 inches.
Given that all three 2020 iPhones will sport OLED displays, we get why the 5.42-inch model will be speculated as the iPhone SE 2 or something close to it. The way we, 73Buzz, see it, it looks like for the 2020 iPhone models, there will be a low-range model, a standard model, and a high-end model.
So is the 5.42-inch model the iPhone SE 2? No, we don’t think so. We would rather just describe it as a smaller iPhone.
Sure, the report said that the 5.42-inch model could have either the Samsung Display’s Y-Octa or LG Display’s TOE touch technology which are solutions that will trim down the display cost. But this is Apple we’re talking about. Remember the iPhone XR which was labeled as the “budget” model?
Having said that, it’s hard to say if it will be on the level the iPhone SE’s price range where it can be classified as its true successor. We rather bet it’s on the level of the iPhone XR’s price range.
But of course, this is assuming that the rumor is true in the first place. But it’s still interesting nonetheless because it gives hope to the tech enthusiasts who have been waiting for an iPhone SE 2 or something just close to it.
But what do you think? What are the chances of this rumor being true? Is the 5.42-inch model really the iPhone SE 2? Tell us in the comment section below.
