Ian Beer Released Second iOS 11.3.1 Exploit; Jailbreak Toolkit Expected Soon?
Ian Beer isn’t a new name in the jailbreak community. As a matter of fact, the Project Zero has released some exploits that lead to a jailbreak. Beer is now back publishing what he calls empty_list, a proof-of-concept exploit for yet a different iOS 11.3.1 kernel bug.
For some reference, Ian Beer has been a contributory and extremely influential figure in the jailbreak community lately. He has never essentially put together a jailbreak that is utilized to free Apple’s iOS-powered handsets.
But despite that, he has been the discoverer of kernel-level bugs and the maker of some exploit proofs-of-concept which demonstrate how those bugs can be utilized and exploited. One of the said projects was used in the current Electra jailbreak tool which frees the iOS devices that are running iOS 11.1.2. His work is also going to be entrenched within the next-gen of the Electra jailbreak which will liberate the iOS 11.3.1 devices.
It is also worth mentioning that, CoolStar, who is behind Electra, had formerly taken to Twitter to suggest that the first update to the platform offering has support for iOS 11.3.1. Unluckily, it will arrive as a developer-only release as it will necessitate an active and paid Apple Developer account to work, but recently CoolStar confirmed that it’s not the case anymore.
Moreover, there was small to no additional details provided about that or the reasons behind why but it could be down to the limits of the bug which was being utilized. However, this newest bug by Ian Beer could shed some light to that darkness. It is the second exploit released by Ian Beer for iOS 11.3.1 and it’s the one that doesn’t necessitate a distinct dev-only privilege to activate.
Since it’s kernel-level exploit and is compatible with iOS 11.3.1 there’s a possibility that this could be utilized in the Electra iOS 11.3.1 jailbreak tool. Nonetheless, this is yet to be confirmed by CoolStar. Always stay tuned for further details that will surely surface in the coming days.
