Foldable phones are becoming the next big thing in the smartphone industry for some time now. It seems that this becomes a reality and its era is finally upon us. It may or may not be to everyone’s expectations.

According to PCMag, a little-known Chinese company Royale Corporation has beaten some of the mainstream brands like Samsung, LG, Microsoft, and Huawei in introducing the world’s first smartphone with a foldable display. Those giants were reportedly working on their foldable phones that could be unveiled most likely at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 in January.

The world’s first foldable phone is called the FlexiPai and was introduced on Wednesday in Beijing, China. Ice Universe posted its video showing the device can work as both a tablet and a phone. The device seems to be a working prototype since the software somehow switches from full screen to half screen.

This tablet-sized phone is built with a flexible screen. It can be bent into a shape like the size of a small paperback book or a wallet. The device does not fold flat making it pretty bulky when packed away. So, its normal thickness is 7.6 millimeter, which is thicker and does not simply get doubled when folded.

In terms of specification, the FlexiPai features a 7.8-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,440 pixels if unfolded. It weighs 0.70 pounds, which doubles the weight of the current iPhone X. A 7nm octa-core Qualcomm chipset is clocked at 2.8GHz. This means that this is the first device to run Snapdragon 855 or Snapdragon 8150 flagship processor.

The device comes with Android 9 Pie and a custom Water operating system 1.0 skin on top. The dual camera is on the back with a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 20-megapixel telephoto lens. The fast charging technology Ro Charge powers it from zero to 80 percent in an hour with a 3,800mAh battery.  Its retail price is CNY 8,999 (roughly $1,300 or Rs 95,000) and the top-end model at CNY 12,999 (around $1,900 or Rs 137,000).
