The first Mavic line from DJI went out two years ago and was considered to be one of the top consumer drone class out there. Recently, the same company delivered their second generation Mavic line in the form of the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom. How would they compare to its predecessors and is it worth for an upgrade, let’s take a quick look?

Some drone enthusiasts are still not certain about the difference between the original Mavic line and the Mavic 2 series. Our team compiled all the essential information that you need to answer all of the common things you need to know about the Mavic and the Mavic 2.

Mavic Pro

The Mavic Pro is part of the original Mavic line that roamed the skies for two years before the arrival of its predecessors. It is one of the most iconic foldable drones that made an impact on the drone community with the combination of performance and ease of usage.

Compact and lightweight, that is the best way of describing the Mavic Pro. Weighing only 734 grams and has a size of 335mm or 13.9 inches, it can fit into a small compartment and because of the compact design, it became one of the best outdoor drones ever.

Featuring an image sensor of 1/2.3 inch with an image resolution of 12 megapixels, it can produce quality pictures and videos. The Mavic Pro also sports a maximum of 60 Mbps video bitrate which helps produce those quality shots.

It can stay up in the air for 27 minutes and has a maximum speed of 65 kilometers per hour or 40 miles per hour which can be considered one of the best in its class. It also has a maximum range of up to 7 km or roughly 4.3 miles.

Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom

With the recent updates for the line, we could expect significant upgrades in some major aspects of the of the drone. Physically, the new generation drones are slightly bigger and heavier. These things bring a slight advantage on its performance and let’s see how those improvements.

Design-wise, the original Mavic series share the same similarities in its structure. But the dimensions show that the Mavic 2 lines are heavier and bigger than its past peers.

The Mavic 2 Pro weights at 907 grams while the Mavic 2 Zoom is at 905g which makes the 2 Zoom a few grams lighter than the Pro. However, still more than the considerable weight compared to its predecessors.

One possible reason why the new generation Mavic 2 drones are heavier than the original is the improvements in its internals. The Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom can stay up in the air for up to 31 minutes.

On the camera standpoint, the Mavic 2 Zoom features the same sensor as the Mavic Pro. However, the added zoom feature of the next generation drone provides new depth and flexibility when it comes to getting more quality videos and image. Another noteworthy update for the Zoom is the Dolly Effect that produces a uniques style compared to ordinary videos taken from a drone.

Meanwhile, the Mavic 2 Pro sports 1-inch sensor with a heavy-duty 20-megapixel camera. Both of the new generation drones got a maximum video bitrate of 100 Mbps. The new drones also top it up on speed as it flies around at a max speed of up to 72 kph or 45 mph.

In my opinion, the most important thing we need to consider is the cost and the effectiveness of the device. The Mavic Pro got a price tag of $999 while the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom is at $1,499 and $1,249 respectively.

If you’re just looking for a casual experience in drones, just stick with a decent but performing line. However, if you’re planning to be serious about a new hobby, go for the best as it surely is a great deal for you.
