It looks like Jin (Kim Seok-Jin), the oldest member of BTS, will have no choice but to take a break from the group for the mandatory military service that almost all South Korea male citizens have to go through. And this time around, we already have date: He will enlist no later than June 2020 and fans are heartbroken.
Jin Leaving For The Military
Just a few days ago, we published an article about Jin could take a break from BTS in 2020 due to the mandatory military service but mentioned no specific month.
As we’ve mentioned in our previous article, under the Military Service Act of 1949 which was implemented in 1957, male citizens of South Korean between the ages of 18 and 28 are required to perform compulsory military service which will last at least 21 months.
Jin himself was born on December 4, 1992. That makes him currently 26 years old (internationally) and 27 years old (Korean age).
Of course, there are people exempted from the mandatory military service. There are a few conditions available to avoid it, but none of them is an easy feat to achieve.
Aside from women who are not required but are allowed to enlist, male citizens must at least meet one of the following conditions:
- Win a medal at the Olympics.
- Top the podium at the Asian Games.
- Win first or second place at an international arts competition.
Many Heartbroken Fans
According to a report, many fans are heartbroken knowing that Jin will enlist no later than June 2020. There have also been concerns from fans about how the rest of the group will handle with a missing member. It’s not that the group’s popularity will fall due to a missing member, but it’s that the members of BTS have a strong brotherly bond together.
In a YouTube video of CBS Sunday Morning, Jin addressed the matter regarding his enlistment.
“As a Korean, it’s natural,” Jin said. “And someday, when duty calls, we’ll be ready to respond and do our best.”
Meanwhile, in a tweet by @jjimvely:
“BTS members had a discussion regarding their military service. The members have greater attachment to the group than to individual activities. There is a consensus to minimize the team’s absence.”
As for the fan reactions about Jin enlisting:
