AirPods 2019 and 2020 Rumors And Predictions, Release Dates, Specs And Features
Apple’s wireless earpiece – AirPods – is reportedly getting an upgrade. The following year, it will be updated once again. Furthermore, around 110 million units of the AirPods 2 are estimated to be sold by 2021.
Hold On For A Moment… There’s A Bit Of A Confusion
Please note that things are a bit confusing between the 2019 and 2020 version.
Some reports refer the 2019 AirPods as “Updated AirPods”. Meanwhile, the 2020 AirPods is referred to as “AirPods 2.0”.
On other reports, they mention “AirPods 2” on the headline but doesn’t specify which is of the two (2019 and 2020) is the real AirPods 2 — some didn’t even mention the word “AirPods 2” on the body. Does this mean that both are the AirPods 2? It’s really vague.
Although we (73Buzz) like to think the 2019 AirPods is the updated version of the current model, while 2020 AirPods is indeed the AirPods 2 because of this line from Apple Insider…
More time is spent on the 2020 upgrade in the note, however. That revision will have an unspecified “all-new design,” with Apple’s intent for the release said to push replacement of the first generation of the product.
…we decided to just call them 2019 AirPods and 2020 AirPods in the meantime before we finally get a clearer picture. But in case any of you, our dear readers, know, please do tell us in the comment section below.
The 2019 AirPods
According to reports, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the Cupertino-based tech company will upgrade its AirPods and its wireless charging case. The said earpiece is expected to come in early 2019.
As for the improvements, it includes its wireless charging capabilities and Bluetooth spec upgrade (possibly Bluetooth 5.0). In addition to that is a revised W-series chip – the very processor that Apple uses on its wireless devices like Apple Home and Apple Watch.
The 2020 AirPods
As for the 2020 AirPods, it will have an unspecified all-new design. Kuo said that it will offer an “innovative user experience” and come with “high integration with iOS and Mac products”.
Regarding its release date, there are two stories — both quoting Kuo. A report published on December 2 stated that the 2020 AirPods is expected to launch in early 2020. An hour later, another report claimed that Kuo updated his predictions, saying that it will come in late 2020.
Growth Estimates For AirPods
Kuo also gave his prediction regarding how many AirPods units Apple will be able to sell. By 2019, he estimates around 55 million units will be sold, around 80 million in 2020, and 110 million in 2021.
