Reasons Why iOS 11.3.1 Electra Jailbreak Release Was Delayed Publicized By Reddit User
The jailbreak community is undoubtedly waiting for the iOS 11.3.1 Electra jailbreak release. Unluckily, the said public rollout has been delayed; but then, a Reddit user Samg_is_a_Ninja explains the reason behind the launch postponement.
Ian Beer (Google’s Project Zero security researcher) had released the following exploits multi_path (a.k.a “mp”) and empty_list (a.k.a “el”). The Reddit user clarifies that the first “mp” exploit has a better success rate, but necessitates an Apple Developer account, which is tagged at $99 per year as it necessitates a developer certificate. The second one which is the “el” exploit doesn’t need a developer certificate but has a low success rate. It is also worth noting that pwn20wnd has made some enhancements, but the success rate is still 1/3.
In addition, the Reddit user also explained that developing the iOS 11.3.1 Electra jailbreak tool hasn’t been easy. This is because Apple has added new security features which utilize “an APFS snapshot over a typical root partition.”
The jailbreak community supposed that it would be somewhat easy to recondition the old code from Electra 11.1.X and just swap out the kernel exploits. Nonetheless, after running the new kernel exploits, it was learned that the Cupertino-based tech giant incorporated a new security feature that’s utilizing APFS snapshot over a typical root partition.
But despite the delays, there’s still good news and that is the security feature presented by Apple is new so it appears to be “littered with exploits”. Initially, Johnathan Levin has plans of working on writing exploit that would make the awareness that leys initial remount of / discovered by @SparkZheng even enhanced. But then, Levin seems to have dropped the urgency of completing the exploit as he got spammed on Twitter.
Moreover, the Reddit user also pointed out that the WebKit version of el has been released. This has the possibility of jailbreaking iOS 11.3.1 through the use of Safari as an alternative to a sideloaded app.
With this, the jailbreakers are advised to be patient since cracking Apple’s security really takes time. Also, they must bear in mind that what important is that the iOS 11.3.1 Electra jailbreak tool is reliable and is meticulously tested as there is a possibility of bricking their iOS device. As of now, CoolStar hasn’t revealed the release of the toolkit so always stay tuned!
