Deadly Shooting in Florida: 17 Killed, Dozens Injured
This time, Florida bore the brunt of a former student’s ill feelings. A horrific shooting incident took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 students and injuring several others. This makes for the first ghastly shooting incident in the year 2018. The school will remain shut for next few days and grief counseling will be offered to students and their families, said Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie.
The main suspect, Nikolas Cruz, who carried out the shooting of innocent students was reportedly expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons. On Wednesday at 3.00 pm, law enforcement department of the area received alarm about the shooting. They immediately responded and reached the school. According to investigators, the suspect, Nikolas Cruz, pulled the fire alarms to create panic among students. As soon as students came out of the classes, Nikolas Cruz open fired killing 17 innocent students. Many students hid within the school premises until law enforcement department arrived at the scene.
Reportedly, students even texted “Good Bye” to their dear ones as the shooting was taking place. Some students recorded the horror on their phones. Several students were evacuated as the law enforcement officers arrive to take over the premises. The accused made a desperate attempt to sneak out in the crowd but was caught by the officials.
The police department is investigating are crucial details about the accused Nikolas Cruz. They said that he used .223 caliber, AR-15 style firearm to execute the shooting on Wednesday, 14th February.
Debate on Gun Culture
This shooting once again revives the biggest debate in the US about the much prevalent gun culture. In an official statement by the President, Donald Trump said, “My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school”.
